CHAIRS FOR CHILDREN: Following last year's successful auction of fiberglass lobsters painted by local artists, Pathways for Children in Gloucester has launched a new community art event.

Forty custom-made, white Adirondack chairs are the focus this year, with regional artists already signing up to paint and decorate. The completed chairs will be on display throughout Cape Ann during the summer and auctioned in September.

The chairs were made by craftsman Scott Masi, whose work has been featured in the magazines Coastal Living. Fine Woodworking, and Better Homes and Gardens, They are solid mahogany with stainless-steel fittings.

Participating artists to date include Oliver Balf, Joan Bediz. Larry Bitman. Caro Gray-Bosca, John Caggiano, Jan Charles, Kathy Connolly, Charlie Crowley, Val Doyon, Paul Gaucher, Paul George, Rose Marie Glen, Pam Hawkes, Mary Hughes, Penny Neal, Tom Nicholas, Peter Niemitz, Sally Seamans, Kathy Speranza, Gene Stewart, Loretta Stride, Marilyn Swift, Paul Swigart, Bruce Turner, Jeff Weaver, Loren Widtfeldt-Doucette, and Chris Williams.

Oliver Balf's lobster motif decks one of the 40 chairs that will
be auctioned to benefit Patlways for Children in Gloucester.

The fund-raising campaign, "Chairs for Children: Take a Seat for Pathways," is designed to raise money to fill gaps in state
and local funding. Last year, more than $140,000 was raised in the lobster auction.
