CHAIRS for CHILDREN features 45 hand-painted and decorated Adirondack
chairs, n display throughout the summer and then auctioned on September
16th to benefit Pathways programs for more than 400 Cape Ann
children. The event has been made possible through sponsorship donations
from local businesses, community groups, and individuals, and the
support of local artists.
Through a partnership between the GHS Carpentry and Art Departments,
this exaggerated Adirondack chair has been the CHAIRS for CHILDREN
mascot helping to build excitement and interest in the event.
At the end of the summer the chair will return to its roots and become
the property of Gloucester High School.
Taking three months to complete, students from GHSs Honors and
Advance Placement Studio Art taught by Jacqueline Underwood, worked
to create a concept that would accommodate everyones individual
talents, and appeal to both adults and children.
The students came up with a fantasy concept, working from a story
that began with their quest to unearth Gloucesters buried treasure.
Their story has the team of students traveling back in time, defeating
a band of salty pirates, and recovering a treasure map of Trogabigzanda,
(or Gloucester as its currently known), and following the map
through the dense forests of Dogtown, the rocky shores of East Gloucester,
and finally to Stage Fort Park where the students unearth a sea chest
filled with treasures and the Throne of Trogabigzanda.
As the students point out, fishermen say there are still treasures
to be found in Gloucester, and perhaps if you use the map and your
wit you too can find the treasures of Trogabigzanda!
Please join us in thanking the students at Gloucester High School
for supporting the youth of their community through their participation
in CHAIRS for CHILDREN.
