Small Lobster Adoption Sponsors Small Lobster Stories and Photos

This summer, local businesses are showing their support of Pathways for Children by adopting two-foot long lobsters that have been lovingly painted and decorated by Pathways' children from the after-school program. The children ranged in age from 6 to 12 years old.

The two-foot lobsters are the little siblings of much larger lobsters that have made an appearance throughout Cape Ann this summer. The larger lobsters made their public debut at the Horribles Parade in Gloucester on July 3. Starting on July 6th, the little lobsters began their appearances in stores and other local businesses for the period of time they have been adopted by their hosts. Businesses can adopt the little lobsters for anywhere from one week to the entire summer. Look for all the lobsters beginning July 6th and for the "Lobster Landings Map" which will be available at both Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce locations.

The 20 endearing little lobsters, colorful and sparkling, reflect the personalities of the young children that decorated them. Each has a name and a story. By adopting one of these charming crustaceans, you will be supporting a most worthwhile cause. Sparkley is eight years old. Diormira found her in New York state. Sparkley's favorite food is shrimp. She has four cousins, two sisters and two brothers. She only likes to do Sparkley stuff. She has a lot of friends. Sparkley's best friend is Anthony the Lobster. She goes to lobster school and is in the second grade. Her teacher's name is Mrs. Foley. She learns a lot in school. Her favorite object is sparkles. Her favorite sport is lobster cheerleading. Her favorite animal is the LOBSTER!

One day I was at Good Harbor Beach and a lobster came crawling up on to the beach. He asked me if he could have a bite of my sandwich. I told him "yes" if he came to Pathways for Children to be decorated. He was so happy to be painted and fancy.

I found Edward in the Caribbean Ocean near the Dominican Republic. He is 13 years old and his favorite food is fish - shark. He has one sister and two brothers. His favorite color is blue like the ocean and the sky. His best friends are Justin Timberlake and Hilary Duff. His favorite place is in the ocean under a rock. He likes to travel all around the seven seas and sing.

I found him in the Indian Ocean. He is 18 years old and his best friends are Michael and Jamie. He is a big Patriot's fan and his favorite player is Tom Brady. His favorite movie star is Jim Carrey because he stars in all the funny movies. He has a car -it's a limo- and he has never driven it out of the sea. He travels to all the seas to visit other lobsters.

One day I was on the Boulevard and I saw a lobster climb up the railing from the beach. He was walking for exercise. He walked up to Pathways and he was painted and made fancy.

One day there was a walking lobster. We met him on the beach. His favorite sport is lobsterball. Edward and Sparkley are his best friends. He has a pet starfish named "Salt".

I found Sarah when she was a baby. I fed her and took care of her. She is 9 years old. She goes out by herself. Sarah eats shrimp. She likes to go to her friend's house, who is also a lobster. Her name is Christina.

John has yellow dots all over his body. These are so he can blend in with the polka dot plants in the ocean. He is 11 years old and he has two stripes on each claw and one is lighter than the other and this helps to tell that each claw does a different job.

He acts like a spider. He looks like an overgrown crab with silver and gold dots. Spiderman is 25 years old and came from Oklahoma. He climbs on the walls to catch flies.

He comes from the digital world. He battles sharksters - they are 1/3 shark, 1/3 spider and 1/3 crab. There is a bridge from our world to the digital world. The lobsters battle the sharksters and the lobsters take two sharksters back to the digital world. Augamon is a fire digimon. He gets to throw fireballs at the sharksters. He had to battle a giant sharkster - Augamon threw fireballs at the big sharkster and won the battle.

Swirl got her name because she is covered by a lot of swirls. She was born in the Atlantic Ocean.

Flower is beautiful. She traveled from Mexico to get to Gloucester. She traveled with humpback whales. Flower is an angel. She loves to play and smile.

Piqueachew is a very tough lobster. He was born in the water. He can swim very fast. He was raised by a Chinese lobster. His Mom couldn't take care of him because there were too many sharks. Now he is a karate master.

Once upon a time there was a lobster called "Sharkey". He came from Australia. When he came back from Australia he brought a friend along with him. His name was Freddy. The next day Freddy and Sharkey went to the beach. When they got there they saw two other lobsters named Rose and Swirly. And that is the happy story of Sharkey, Freddy, Rose and Swirly.

Rose came from Florida and her name was Rose and she was swimming with another lobster named Nicole. She is named Rose because she is red. And she found a fish and she ate it for lunch with her friend. Then she went to bed and the next morning she ate breakfast and then she found another lobster named Swirly. Then they went to the beach and she found Sharkey, Wiggle and Nicole. And then they had fun all day long swimming together.

The next day they went to Australia. They met another lobster named Sharkey. Once they were on the beach they saw a lobster swimming. Her name was Rose. Rose has another friend named Nicole and they swam all day long.

She traveled through sharks to get to Gloucester. I named her "Angel" because she is so beautiful. She shares a lot and people like her. I liked painting her.

She is the princess of all the little lobsters. Her mother and father are the King and Queen of the little lobsters. She came from medieval times so she is 20 years old.

Tyler has 7 brothers and sister. He came from Good Harbor Beach. I found him last summer and he was all gold and silver when I found him. He has a little tape on him and he is 8 years old. He plays jokes on his little brothers and sisters. They are very funny jokes. When he goes to his house he will eat all the seaweed. He always plays video games while his family watches TV. He always takes all the shells and throws them all over the place. He is really funny.
Artist Volunteer - Loren (Widtfeldt) Doucette                

Artist Loren (Widtfeldt) Doucette enjoys working in all mediums of paint
and has honed her craft over the past ten years after studying at Salem
State College and the Museum School of Fine Arts. An accomplished
decorative painter and muralist, her work can be found in homes and
business across the Greater Boston and North Shore.
                
Loren enjoys teaching art techniques to adults and children particularly
at the Cape Ann YMCA and the Danvers Council on Aging. Loren lives in
Gloucester with her husband Rick and her son Andrew.
