"Fishing Around"
Lobster ramblings
When this beautiful sculpture of a lobster came into my studio,
I found it a real challenge to devise a meaningful way to paint
it. Accustomed as I am to working on a 2-dimensional surface,
this 3-D form called for a different creative approach. Considering
words associated with 'lobster', I settled on the concept of a
'lobster pot', which triggered the idea of painting it as a piece
of colorful decorative pottery. Using the pottery of Italy and
Portugal as inspiration, and in keeping with Gloucester's fishing
tradition, I began by making studies of nautical images. A compass
rose, a fishermen's wheel, life rings, an anchor, and sailboats
are all incorporated into my design. In addition, cod fish, flounder,
whales, whimsical seahorses, and carp blowing bubbles are among
the images I painted repeatedly in layers around the form. Thus
was created: "Fishing Around" by Marilyn Swift.
