Lobster Landings has been a volunteer-driven initiative
from its inception. More than 80 volunteers make up the ten committees
that have provided their time and expertise on behalf of Pathways
for Children. Led by Sharon Lake, Lobster Landings chair and Pathways
board member, these hard-working committees have helped to organize
and implement the many facets of this huge effort - a new, "signature
event" for Pathways. The production committee got the ball
rolling by locating Jeff and Gene, the talented fabricators, and
charging them with the task of producing Cape Ann's most celebrated
crustacean in a "larger than life" scale. The artist
liaison committee put together a very impressive list of artists,
community leaders, and civic groups to transform the lobsters
into unique, memorable works of art to delight area residents
and the thousands of summer tourists who visit Cape Ann annually.
Stevie LeDuc, chair of the sponsorship committee, led a team of
eighteen volunteers in securing more than thirty official Lobster
Landings Sponsors, see the full list of sponsors on the back page.
The list includes local businesses, galleries, restaurants, banks,
community organizations, individuals and friends. We are also
very proud of our affiliation with THE NORTH SHORE SPIRIT, a Lynn-based
professional baseball team that agreed to be a title sponsor of
Lobster Landings and will be a visible participant in all Lobster
Landings events.
"The idea behind this project was to raise awareness about
Pathways and also create an event that would bring the whole Cape
Ann community together," said John Byrnes, public relations
committee chair and also a Pathways for Children board member.
John and his committee planned extensive media-coverage for all
facets of Lobster Landings. The completed sculptures were introduced
to their sponsors on June 30th at The Cape Ann Marina and Resort
at a sponsor/artist gathering, and made their public debut on
July 3rd in the Horribles Parade, complete with a band, children,
and a marching lobster. On July 5th the display committee began
the distribution of the clawed beauties to their designated Cape
Ann locations for public viewing for the duration of the summer.
After Labor Day, a majority of the lobsters will find their way
to a celebratory gala auction to raise much-needed funds for Pathways.
Additionally, lobsters have been donated by their sponsors to
students at Gloucester High School and Fishtown ARTSPACE, and
participants at the Rose Baker Senior Center, who will keep and
display their works of art once they are completed.
Several smaller lobsters have appeared throughout Cape Ann! These
very special lobster sculptures, decorated and painted by the
children at Pathways with the help of the children's art committee,
were "up for adoption" by local businesses and individuals
This extraordinary event would not have been possible without
the involvement of so many individuals who volunteered their time
to help us organize, promote and celebrate Cape Ann's number one
crustacean. We are indebted to each and every person who shared
their time and talents with us to make Lobster Landings a reality.
It has truly been a project the Cape Ann community has embraced.
