Pathways Fall Coat Drive

Every year Pathways for Children Social Services Department provides nearly 200 winter coats for children in our programs. In the past, Pathways has purchased coats at a significant discount from a supplier who has since gone out of business. As the cold weather sets in, we have begun to reach out to the community for individuals, businesses or organizations who may be interested in helping us gather coats for the children. Currently we are in great need of coats sized 8 and under, particularly sizes 4, 5, 6 or 7 for both boys and girls. In total, we need to collect 120 coats in these sizes by the time winter arrives.

Please contact Stephanie Walters at 978-281-2400 ext. 154 if you are interested in gathering coats or making a donation to support the purchase of new coats. Thank you!

Pathways has received a grant of $1,200 from Cell Signaling Technology in Danvers, to purchase equipment to support the ambitious training schedule currently in place for teachers and staff. A PowerPoint projector and a portable projector screen were purchased with the funds. In the photo, Pathways IT Director Candace Unis is leading one of a series of workshops for staff in the use of the new equipment, which is available to be signed out for trainings.

It has been several months since Pathways was awarded a grant from the Tower Foundation to implement the Second Step violence prevention program at Pathways, and things are moving along well despite some adjustments to our timeline. Two of our staff who were headed to Washington State for part of the Second Step training last February were snowed in - in Manchester New Hampshire - and now must wait until February 2008 for that particular (annual) training to come around again. Despite this setback, our dedicated Second Step team of School Age and Social Work staff have persevered, attending a regional training in Boston, developing curriculum models, and training other Pathways staff. Implementation in the after-school classrooms is well underway. When Don Matteson from Tower spoke with us last month, he was impressed with our progress. And, we are booking another flight to Seattle for February!
Our 40th Birthday Party on Saturday, October 20th is drawing near and we are very excited. The event is from 1-3 pm and will feature face painting, arts and crafts, sing-a-longs, photos with Scooby Doo, birthday cake and more. We are also looking forward to a special visit from The Wheelmen, a national non-profit organization who will display and demonstrate antique bicycles. The Wheelmen are also celebrating their 40th birthday and we are excited to be collaborating with them. The event is open to the public and we hope you will join our staff, children, and families in celebrating 40 years of service in the Cape Ann community.
Derek J. Reed, CFP, Managing Partner of Beauport Financial Services in Gloucester, was named Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Pathways for Children at the Annual Meeting on September 26th. Stepping down is former Chair Greg Neal, who has guided the organization through a transitional period that included a new name and a watershed event called Lobster Landings!

Derek has served as co-chair of the Pathways capital campaign since its launch in 2001. The campaign, which will reach it's conclusion at the end of this year, has made it possible for the organization to purchase and renovate the new Pathways facility at 29 Emerson Avenue.

It has been quite a year for Derek, who also recently attained his Certified Financial Planner status, and welcomed a new baby daughter to his family in the spring.

Kathy Morris, Pathways CFO, became the President of the Rockport Rotary Club, where she has been a member for the past 15 years. The club has also been a supporter of the Pathways Annual Fund and the Annual Coat Drive.
